Environmental Impact Indicators

Environmental quality of buildings according to EN 15978 #

Life cycle assessment with SURAP is based on EN 15978 (Sustainability of construction works—Assessment of the environmental quality of buildings—Calculation method), which aligns with the international standards ISO 14040/44 for life cycle assessment.

Information on products and services (environmental product declarations (EPD)) following EN 15804 are required to assess the environmental quality at the building level. EPDs created before 2022 are based on EN 15804+A1, while newer EPDs are created based on EN 15804+A2.

The SURAP approaches use indicators of either the EN 15804+A1 or the EN 15804+A2 standard. We selected indicators relevant to practical use, such as certification systems and reporting.

Additional indicators for measuring the use of material resources #

The life cycle-wide material resource consumption of products and services is measured using the indicators “Raw Material Input” (RMI) and “Total Material Requirement” (TMR). Together, these two indicators form the product material footprint PMF. More information on the method can be found at:

Abreviation Indikator Unit
RMI Raw Material Input kg raw material
TMR Total Material Requirement kg primary material
